Interregional Training Course on Electrical Grid Considerations and Interactions with the Nuclear Power Plant

Date: September 26, 2022 – September 30, 2022
Location: Argonne National Laboratory, Lemont, IL, USA

Purpose

The purpose of the event is to train the participants from Member States, which are considering a nuclear power programme or preparing to invite bids or negotiate a nuclear power plant (NPP), based on the updated guidance and international experiences on the integration of NPPs to electric grid.

Scope and Nature

This training course will be based on guidance and materials developed for Member States including IAEA Nuclear Energy Series No. NG-T-3.2 (Rev. 1) "Evaluation of the Status of National Infrastructure Development", IAEA Nuclear Energy Series No. NG-T-3.8 "Electric Grid Reliability and Interface with Nuclear Power Plants" and IAEA Nuclear Energy Series No. NG-T-3.23 "Non-baseload Operation in Nuclear Power Plants: Load Following and Frequency Control Modes of Flexible Operation".The IAEA’s specific safety requirements related to the design of nuclear power plants, IAEA Safety Standards Series No. SSR-2/1 (Rev. 1), as referenced in Action 171 of IAEA Safety Standards Series No. SSG-16 and the IAEA Safety Standards Specific Safety Guide No. SSG-34" will also be incorporated into the training materials.The training course is implemented as a face-to-face event, and the experts, including the lecturers from ANL as well as IAEA staff will present and share their experience, highlighting common challenges and good practices.

Expected outputs

This training course will provide information, guidance and practical experience on NPP integration into the grid;

  • Good engineering practices and power studies when connecting NPP to the grid
  • Compliance between grid performance standards and NPP safety and technical requirements
  • Evaluation of power network stability
  • Grid reliability for and with NPP safe operation
